Tour: Literacy
As early language and literacy (reading & writing) develops in the first
three years of life and is linked to a child’s earliest experiences
with books and stories, we have made sure that our entire center is
literacy enriched. Interactions with literacy materials and with adult
are the building blocks for language, reading and writing development.
The Early Literacy theory emphasizes “the more natural unfolding
of skills through the enjoyment of books, the importance of positive
interactions between children and adults, and the critical role of literacy-rich
experiences”.
As a result, we have surrounded the children with a plethora of ways
to develop the necessary early literacy skills that are essential to
literacy development. Tools used are magnetic letters, flannel stories,
magnetic stories, felt stories, tapes, language games, language cards,
puppets, photo cards. As well, the children are exposed to ways to make
their own written work by using a variety of mediums to encourage drawing,
scribbling and writing.
Children will come to understand that the printed word is a powerful
form of communication and this is the foundation for becoming literate
and childcare centers play a critical role in establishing the foundations
of early literacy exposure.
