Tour: Playground
In October, 2005 the Preschool was very fortunate to receive donated money
to install the first fully accessible/sensory playground in all of HRM.
All children should have equal access to an outside play facility that
is designed with diverse needs in mind. That is the reason we concentrated
our efforts to the pursuit of installing the first fully installed wheelchair/sensory
enriched playground, which takes in to consideration the diverse needs
of our current preschool population, future children, as well as the
needs of the community children.
The prepared flooring is wheel chair accessible; pieces of the playground
are also wheelchair accessible including the sand box, water table,
riding toys. As well, the sensory component of the playground addresses
the area of sensory deficiencies in our population of children. Taking
the sensory enriched environment that our center is known for and extending
it outside addresses another important component lacking in our physical
space. Therefore it is not only our children who are physically challenged,
but those who have a sensory processing disorder can also benefit from
a portion of this playground.
Some of the pieces in this playground include:
- wheelchair accessible rubber ground covering
- accessible sand and water tables
- tactile walls
- sound walls
- sound trees
- chimes
Below are photos showing the children having fun in the playground:
