The Benefits of the Family Support Program

• Family support facilitators and families work together in relationships based on respect and equality.


• One coordinated access point to guide families through the many systems that they encounter. These systems may include the Halifax Regional School Board, Department of Health, Department of Community Services, Department of Education, Halifax Regional Municipality Recreation Department, and Federal and Provincial funding programs for persons with disabilities.


• This program is uniquely tailored to the individual needs of each family. Therefore for each family, the agency’s role is different.


• Facilitators seek to eliminate as many barriers as possible for families trying to access this service. Facilitators will happily meet at a time and place that is convenient to each family in an effort to minimize the need for child care and/or transportation.


• Facilitators work towards strengthening and empowering families with knowledge, confidence and skills to become stronger advocates for themselves and their family member.


• The program is flexible and continually responsive to emerging family and community issues.
